A soft tissue ultrasound scan serves to image a mass felt in the superficial tissue of the patient. It is a quick, non-invasive way of determining the characteristics of the mass in order to come to a diagnosis.

This scan examines

  • Any superficial area of soft tissue on the body

Typical requests include

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Lipomas
  • Hematomas
  • Cysts
  • Masses
  • Foreign bodies
  • Hernias

How to prepare for a soft tissue ultrasound

You will need a referral letter from a GP with an Irish Medical Council (IMC) number. The referral letter needs to be dated within 6 months of the scan being carried out.

What to expect from a soft tissue ultrasound?

Ultrasound gel is placed on the patient’s skin and the mass is scanned with an ultrasound probe. Multiple images of it are taken for analysis by a consultant radiologist. We aim to have the report delivered to your GP within 2 business days following your scan.

How long does a soft tissue examination last?

The examination lasts about 10 minutes.
